STUDIO ECOLOGIST
Studio Ecology is the Art of Living Studio Study.
About
Jeff Zimpel—interdisciplinary artist, curator, and educator—composes site-specific installations, inviting creative participation from those who encounter his Living Studio. He received his BFA in Graphic Design from Cardinal Stritch University (‘09) and his MFA in Art & Social Engagement from UW-Milwaukee (‘21). He taught art and design at the secondary and collegiate levels, and is currently working with Arts @ Large as Artist in Residence Curator.
Jeff balances his art and work with a life in dialogue with the other-than-human world. Informed by his lifelong relationship with the forests of Northern Wisconsin, his studio practice is focused on the curious nature of color, on a deep exploration of the world of mark-making, and on encouraging an ecological approach to living and making. He recently published his first book, Seeking Color, and has been working with a merry band of collaborators to perform it to music on sculptural stages. Jeff is currently working on his second book, the source text to his Living Studio approach to teaching and learning, called This Studio is Alive! | 22 Elements of a Living Studio (est. early 2026). This project is about how artists compose their studio spaces, and what common elements appear to come together to create the conditions of a palpable creative spirit.
